Osteopathy

Riverdale Pilates is pleased to offer an on site osteopath, Sophiea Lee. Osteopathy treatments are complex and wholistic, and complimentary to Pilates and Massage.

Biography

Originally from Montreal, Sophiea Lee graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from McGill University, where her interest in osteopathy began early. As a varsity athlete she experienced numerous visits to the McGill Athletics Clinic where she was treated by osteopaths. After graduation she enrolled at the ‘Collège d’études ostéopathiques’ in Montreal. From then on she has acquired experience as an osteopath working in multiple settings including a naturopathic clinic, practical field work, and sports rehabilitation medicine. Sophiea is currently finishing her master’s thesis work focusing on cranial osteopathy and migraines and continues to evolve with post-graduate courses and international conferences.

Description

Osteopathy is a manual therapy with a global view of the body as a whole inter-related functional unit. The osteopath has an extensive knowledge of human anatomy and has been trained in precision palpation. The therapist’s main tools are observation and palpation in order to assess and treat tension zones, lines of gravity, circulation, mobility, vitality, and posture, which may be causing discomfort and pain.

The osteopath's job is to bring the body back to its healthy alignment so that it can efficiently heal itself and encourage its inherent health. The therapist uses a variety of manual techniques in order to promote circulation of the bodily fluids, eliminate dysfunction in the tissues, and release compressed bones and joints. During treatment, the osteopath will aim to find the source of the problem which is not necessarily where the symptoms are manifesting.

A few examples osteopathy can help with:

musculo-skeletal pain such as: neck and back pain, tendonitis, bursitis, sciatica
visceral pain: digestive problems
cranial: headaches, sinusitis,
