Pilates is a specific exercise form that focuses on developing core strength, mobility, improved postural alignment and coordination. It is adaptable to various body types, limitations and injuries.
Joseph Pilates began developing his exercise method during WWI. Over his lifetime he combined elements of yoga, breathwork, weight training and gymnastics to strengthen, center and re-align the body. In the late 1980's, Moire Stott, having trained in the pilates method, developed Stott Pilates. This method further refined the original, taking into account modern knowledge of biomechanics and core strength research.
In the 1990's with its repertoire of over 500 exercises, Pilates grew to become very popular as a fitness workout. In recent years many new methods have sprung up and since there is no regulating or governing body for pilates it is likely that there will be more. At Riverdale Pilates, we strive to offer a great workout but we are also very focused on the original goal of pilates which is rehabilitation. We believe that this focus is the reason our studio has received so many referrals in the past year from physiotherapists, doctors and chiropractors.
Our certified instructors will work with you to develop a workout to meet your objective - whether to increase fitness, overcome an injury or to exercise in spite of chronic illness. As the value of pilates is in the precision and quality of movement, we recommend private classes in order to get the maximum attention. |
